On alumni donations and priorities

October 24th, 2005 by hjl

A little food for thought:

This year has seen many notable calls for donations — for the Asian tsunami, Hurricane Katrina, the recent earthquake in Pakistan and India. This comes in addition to the ongoing needs of other worthy causes doing good works at home and abroad.

As an individual and as a class agent, I sometimes find myself wondering about the priority and impact of contributions to Exeter versus other philanthropic projects. This also comes up as a topic of conversation among classmates. I always encourage classmates to participate, but respect their interest and support for other causes as well.

Ty is on sabbatical

October 9th, 2005 by hjl

I had wondered (but not too much) about where Ty Tingley went. Mystery solved.

Hi, I found your site on Google because I too was wondering what was with the “Acting Principal Tom Hassan.” I couldn’t imagine how Tingley could disappear without a letter being sent to the alumni. But the full text of Hassan’s opening assembly remarks explains that nothing is amiss; Tingley is just on sabbatical until March:

I hope this helps.

Missing persons…

October 7th, 2005 by hjl

I just found a list of “missing persons” from our class that don’t have current contact info listed at the alumni office. If you’re on this list, the good news is you’re not getting junk mail from Exeter. The bad news is you’re missing out on staying in touch with old friends. You can send updates to “records at exeter.edu” (remove the spaces and replace “at” with “@”). If you find this, you might also want to post a reply here, even if you don’t want to hear from the alumni office…

Exeter 199 - the video

September 20th, 2005 by hjl

One of the highlights of the 25th reunion was the great video that Jane Melvin put together for the reunion banquet in the Science Center.

A number of people have asked about getting a copy of the DVD or putting the video on the web, especially for those who weren’t able to attend last May. That sounded like a reasonable idea, it’s just taken a while to make it happen.

A few technical notes:

  • This is a large download. Don’t try this if you’re on a dialup connection.
  • This is presently Windows-only. If I get a usable QuickTime version together I’ll put it here as well. (If you’re a Mac user with video authoring tools and a fast connection, feel free to volunteer.)
  • If you have an older Windows PC, this may not work for you, or you might need to upgrade the Windows Media Player. This uses the WM9 codecs. If you don’t understand this, don’t worry about it.

And now — here’s the online version of
